Upcoming Class Events:

Hello and welcome to Orange Class!

"we place great emphasis on developing each students life and independence skills" Orange class is a secondary phase class for pupils whose primary need is to develop their ability to focus and engage more independently with their learning activities. We aim to develop and then generalise existing skills whilst helping to embed core functional skills.

This year we have a class of 12 students, who are usually supported by 3/4 adults. We enjoy exploring the schools half termly thematic curriculum topics whilst placing great emphasis on developing each students life and independence skills. We work towards outcomes identified through our 'Harford Steps' curriculum and termly 'personalised learning goals' (PLGs) which provide a greatly individualised approach to meet areas for development and break down barriers to learning.

The adults in the room are very much geared towards facilitating independence in all areas, from academic work to tying a shoelace, giving pupils the time and opportunity to explore challenges, "we give our pupils the opportunity to explore challenges, make mistakes and learn from them in a safe and supportive environment"make mistakes and learn from them in a safe ad supportive environment. We learn new concepts through lots of concrete exploration and much of our learning take place away from the table top, in the wider school and out in the local community. The students run their own daily class snack cafe to help develop both money and work based skills, and take ownership of both their class and the school as a whole, completing weekly jobs, working as a team to help their friends and facilitate the smooth running of the classroom. We also enjoy a wide variety of community visits on at least a weekly basis, including topic related locations and trips to the library to select reading and topic books. However, everyone's favourite by far is our supermarket shopping trips and café treats to finish, which provide many opportunities to covertly develop our understanding use / of money and our communication based skills!

We have created a 'Home Learning Support Sheet' for anyone in class who needs to access learning away from school at this time. On the sheet you will find activity ideas and links covering each of the school curriculum areas. In the instance of any whole class or individual need for remote learning your class teacher will be in touch to provide further support and resources.
